What Happened

Austin Tucker Martin, 21, of North Carolina, drove through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was exiting around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2026. According to the Secret Service, Martin was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can when confronted by agents within the secure perimeter of the Palm Beach resort.

When ordered to drop the items, Martin put down the fuel can but raised the shotgun into a shooting position, according to law enforcement officials. At that point, two Secret Service agents and one Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy fired their weapons, fatally wounding the intruder. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago during the breach, as he was at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Why It Matters

This represents a significant security breach at the private residence and club of a sitting U.S. President. Mar-a-Lago serves as both Trump’s primary residence and the “Winter White House,” making it one of the most heavily protected properties in the country.

The incident raises questions about perimeter security at presidential properties and highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the Secret Service. The fact that an armed individual was able to drive through the secure perimeter suggests potential vulnerabilities in the multi-layered security system protecting the property.

The presence of a fuel can alongside the weapon has added to concerns about the suspect’s intentions, though investigators have not yet determined a motive.

Background

Mar-a-Lago has been the site of previous security incidents during Trump’s presidency and beyond. The 126-room mansion sits on 17 acres in Palm Beach and operates as both a private residence and exclusive club. The property is surrounded by multiple security perimeters maintained by the Secret Service.

According to law enforcement sources, Martin had been reported missing by his family several days before the incident. Investigators believe he traveled south from North Carolina and acquired the shotgun along the way, though the exact timeline and how he obtained the weapon remain under investigation.

The Secret Service maintains a significant presence at Mar-a-Lago year-round, with security measures that include physical barriers, surveillance systems, and multiple checkpoints. The property’s security has been enhanced since Trump’s presidency began.

What’s Next

The FBI and multiple law enforcement agencies are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Investigators are working to compile a psychological profile of Martin and determine what motivated him to attempt the breach.

Key areas of the ongoing investigation include:

  • How Martin was able to drive through the north gate security checkpoint
  • The timeline of his journey from North Carolina to Florida
  • How and where he acquired the shotgun
  • His mental state and potential motives
  • Any possible connections to other individuals or groups

The Secret Service will likely review and potentially enhance security protocols at Mar-a-Lago and other presidential properties based on findings from this incident. The agency conducts thorough reviews after any security breach to identify vulnerabilities and implement improvements.

Law enforcement officials have not indicated whether Martin had any history of mental health issues or previous encounters with authorities, though his family’s missing person report suggests they were concerned about his wellbeing in the days leading up to the incident.
